November 3, 2010 -- President James Michel has congratulated Brazil's first woman president, Mrs Dilma Rousseff, who was elected on Sunday.

"It gives me great pleasure to extend to you on behalf of the  government and people of the Republic of Seychelles our warmest and most sincere congratulations, following your election as the first female president of the Federal Republic of Brazil," said President Michel in a message to President Rousseff.

"The historical assumption to this high office by a woman is a symbol of pride not only to the world in general but to us in Seychelles. It is certainly testimony of further hope, and I am confident that the policies which you have envisioned for Brazil will allow for continuity of political stability and even greater economic and social progress.

"Like you, we also believe that equal opportunities for men and women are an essential principle for democracy, and I am confident that under your leadership Brazil will be able to consolidate its place as an important partner in the international arena.

"It is my wish that the ties of friendship and cooperation between our two countries will be developed during your tenure of office. I look forward to working closely with you to find innovative ways that will contribute to the further strengthening of ties between our two governments and peoples.

"In wishing you every success in discharging the formidable tasks and challenges ahead, please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest contribution," concluded the message from President Michel.
