November 15, 2010 -- President James Michel has welcomed with great satisfaction the weekend release from house arrest of Myanmar's (Burma) pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The President said he considered the event a great step in the right direction for the people of Myanmar to take their destiny into their own hands.
In a statement, Mr Michel hailed the determination and leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi in her efforts to bring freedom and emancipation to her people.
"After many years of peaceful but determined efforts on behalf of her countrymen, we are pleased to see this great step forward which means so much to the people of Burma, but also to everyone around the world who believes in the power of democracy, of peace and of unity.  Her strength of leadership over many years has been exemplary and we see this occasion as a great opportunity for the people of Burma."

As part of Seychelles' efforts to promote active economic diplomacy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has looked towards Asia as a key area for development of bilateral relations and improved governance conditions in the region are a welcome boost to the potential links that Seychelles can develop.

"No matter our distance, we always stand shoulder to shoulder with partners who are striving to improve the lives of their citizens and create a world where peace and economic development can grow and flourish," said Mr Michel.
