Tue, 11 January 2011
January 11 2011 -- President James Michel has reappointed Judge Duncan Gaswaga as a judge of the Supreme Court for a two year term, upon the recommendation of the Constitutional Appointments Authority.
Judge Gaswaga was sworn into office yesterday at State House in the presence of President James Michel.
The swearing-in ceremony was also attended by the Vice President, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Members of the Constitutional Appointments Authority (CCA), Judges of the Supreme Court and the Appeals Court, the Registrar and the Attorney General.
The CCA recommended the reappointment of Judge Gaswaga in view of 'exceptional circumstances' related to the judge.
Judge Gaswaga still has a large number of criminal cases to finish hearing, as well as some civil cases, and in order for the proceedings to be completed, the judge was given an extra two years for this purpose.
It was also noted that Judge Gaswaga is the head of the recently created Criminal Division of the Supreme Court and has greatly contributed to the reforms of the Seychelles Criminal Justice System.
