Public Service Day Message

Sun, 26 June 2011

June 24 2011 -- In the space of less than a week President James Michel has spoken of the need for a strong, disciplined and dynamic civil service.

On June 18 National Day he said public service has always been an issue of concern.

On Public Service Day on June 23, the President reiterated the role of the public service to help improve services to the population.

He extended his salutations to all public sector workers in Seychelles.

"I always speak of public service with passion because I believe that a strong, disciplined and dynamic public service is the foundation for national development.  My Government is committed to the development of a competent public service that is characterized by good governance and excellence at all levels.  We cannot achieve this goal without the commitment of all the staff and the leadership of our institutions.

"As professionals in the public service, you have a crucial role to play in using your knowledge, your skills, your creativity, your intelligence and your talent in sound policy development, in providing advice, in the implementation of policy and projects, and especially in service delivery.

"You need to be compassionate and receptive to the problems of our people.  You need to counsel them with patience and understanding, and you must find timely solutions to their problems.  Above all, it is the high quality of service that you must deliver to your fellow-citizens, that will distinguish you as a public officer.  It is a most challenging role, but it can also be very rewarding.

"I congratulate all those of you who selflessly give of your best everyday, sometimes in difficult circumstances.  The public service is proud of you, and it will in turn do its utmost to support you in every way possible.

"But never rest on your laurels.  In the knowledge economy of the competitive world in which we live, we must always keep ourselves abreast of best practice.  Find the time for self-development in your areas of expertise.  Be innovative, contribute your ideas, and participate fully in the development of your organisations.

"On this Public Service Day, let us all reflect on how each one us can deliver a service that is better, faster and smarter, and help to continue winning for the New Seychelles!

"I wish you all a very happy Public Service Day."

James Alix Michel
