President and Leader of Opposition discuss law and order, electoral reform and national unity

President James Michel met with the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Mr. David Pierre, this morning at State House.
The President said they have exchanged views of national importance and that together, they have looked at the way forward for the development of Seychelles.
The President and Mr. Pierre discussed a variety of topics, including the report of alleged brutalities by Seychelles Police officers and National Drugs Enforcement Agency (NDEA) agents. They also discussed the Public Order Act, which came into effect on 06th January 2014, noting that there are two cases against this act currently before the Constitutional Court.
In relation to the process of electoral reforms, Mr Pierre said that they had agreed that the report and recommendations by the Electoral Reform Committee should be presented to the Seychelles National Assembly before the end of this year.
Mr. Pierre also spoke on the necessity to improve the quality and standard of education in all schools and institutions such as the University of Seychelles as well as the importance for ensuring that discipline is maintained across the board.
The Leader of Opposition also suggested that pensioners be given increases in their pensions in the future.
President Michel and Mr Pierre also discussed the relocation of the Liberation Monument (“Zonm Lib”). Mr Pierre commented that the step taken is one in "the right direction."
