Ladies and gentlemen,
I have the pleasure to welcome Mr. Edwin Kimani who was appointed earlier this year the International Award Association’s Regional Director for Africa and the Indian Ocean. I trust that your stay so far has been both fruitful and pleasant.
I am happy to note, Mr. Kimani, that the International Award Association is reinforcing its commitment to the region and its understanding that young people in Africa need further access to development opportunities.
The International Award is an exciting self-development programme available to all young people aged 14 to 25 worldwide that equip them with life skills to make a difference to themselves, their communities and the world. Over 7 million young people worldwide have taken up the Award challenge. It is a journey of personal discovery and adventure for young people. It challenges the youth to become responsible, caring members of the community. It opens up new horizons and encourages friendship and links. It builds their confidence and makes a positive impact on their community through volunteering.
The International Award can contribute to a country's national plan for young people, as expressed in national youth policies or other social policies, by providing a dynamic youth development framework for tackling such issues.
The Programme can also equip young people, in the case of Seychelles, by creating awareness on the importance of mitigating climate change and in exploring what youth can do to tackle it.
One of the key achievements of the Seychelles President’s Award Scheme is that the International Awards Programme has approved for us to hold our Gold Award Expedition here in Seychelles.
For the first time, this expedition has been held on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. It has thus allowed our participants not only to acquire the required skills, but also to better appreciate the environment and the biodiversity of our country.
August 12th marked the start of the International Year of Youth, launched to recognise and celebrate young people's contribution to the world. It is the opportunity for the President’s Award Programme to encourage young people’s energy, imagination and initiatives, and enhance their contribution to world peace and development.

Mesdames et messieurs,
A l’occasion de la cinquième édition de la remise des trophées d’or et des certificats, il m’est particulièrement agréable aujourd’hui de célébrer cet évènement avec vous.
Nos 48 détenteurs des trophées d’or sont des jeunes solides et déterminés. Leur réussite démontre qu’ils ont lutté pour l’excellence. Je souhaite que cette volonté d’être le meilleur dans ce programme, continue de vous motiver pour mieux faire, et de réussir dans tout ce que vous entreprenez dans votre vie.
Je sais que vous avez traversé certains moments difficiles en vue de parvenir à ce niveau, mais votre conviction personnelle, le soutien de vos parents et des proches ont contribué à faire de vous ce que vous êtes devenus.
Il est également important de montrer de la reconnaissance pour les encadreurs du programme et tous les volontaires qui se sont tout le temps montrés disposés à soutenir votre parcours.
Le volontariat est une disposition de cœur chez une personne qui croit sincèrement en une cause, et nous avons toujours besoin de volontaires donnant un coup de main pour élever encore plus haut les Seychelles, dans tous les domaines.
Je voudrais ici, renouveler l’engagement de mon Gouvernement, ainsi que mon engagement personnel, de continuer à soutenir le Conseil National de la Jeunesse et les autres organisations qui œuvrent, en vue de faire de vous cette génération que nous souhaitons.
Je tiens à vous rassurer qu’en dépit de tous les défis, le développement de la jeunesse reste pour nous une priorité. Les efforts du Gouvernement dans le sens d’un développement national et global de la jeunesse, se poursuivront continuellement.
Ensemble, nous arriverons à réaliser davantage de succès et à surmonter toutes les barrières.
